Colorectal Surgeon

Adele is Head of the Colorectal Unit at the Austin and has a strong focus on providing the highest level of patient care.

She has trained in Australia, the UK and USA, including at the Cleveland Clinic.

Both gastroscopy and colonoscopy are performed by her, as well a general colorectal surgery.

Training has been completed in Pelvic Floor Ultrasound, Anorectal manometry and Pudendal nerve studies to assess; faecal incontinence, constipation and defecation problems, anal fistula and anorectal cancers.

Adele is also available for GP Education Sessions, providing informative and helpful information on topics such as:

  • How to reduce the risk of my patients getting bowel cancer.
  • IBS - please help me!
  • Faecal Incontinence Management

Adele Burgess


Colorectal and General Surgeon

Mr David Proud is a Colorectal and General Surgeon who has trained in Australia and internationally. He consults in Heidelberg with rooms adjacent to both the Austin Hospital and Warringal Private Hospital.

After receiving his medical degree from Monash University he went on to complete training in general surgery at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne. He received his Fellowship in General Surgery from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2016.

David has completed Post-Fellowship training in Colorectal Surgery with the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand (CSSANZ) that included fellow positions at St Vincent’s University Hospital in Dublin (Ireland) and at the Austin Hospital.

He is currently appointed to the Austin Hospital as a Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon and also operates at Warringal Private Hospital.

David Proud


Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist

Dr Siddharth Sood is a consultant Gastroenterologist and Head of Hepatology at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. He performs gastroscopy and colonoscopy at Royal Melbourne, Melbourne Private and Victorian Day Procedure Centre (Heidelberg).

His colonoscopy skills have been regularly audited through his work at Royal Melbourne, with a >95% caecal intubation rate and an excellent 45% adenoma detection rate (ADR) in screening colonoscopy.

He is involved in education and research, with many research publications in high quality journals. His research gate profile is:

Siddharth Sood


Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist

Dr Lucy Lim is a Consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist with public appointments at both Austin Hospital and St Vincent’s Hospital. She consults broadly in all fields of Gastroenterology, including functional gut disorders, bowel cancer screening, endoscopy (gastroscopy, colonoscopy and capsule endoscopy), gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, iron deficiency anaemia, coeliac disease, with special interests in liver disease and viral hepatitis.

Dr Lim graduated in Medicine from Monash University with Honours in 2003 and undertook Gastroenterology training at St Vincent’s and The Austin Hospital. In 2010 she attained her Fellowship with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. Dr Lim was awarded a GESA scholarship for her PhD in Hepatitis B through The University of Melbourne and furthered her training by undertaking a Hepatology Fellowship through the University Health Network in Toronto.

Dr Lim is dedicated to providing high quality gastroenterological care with open communication, compassion and sensitivity to individual patient needs. She speaks fluent Mandarin and basic Cantonese. Lucy would be pleased to discuss patients with GPs or other specialists and will accommodate urgent referrals.

Lucy Lim


Colorectal Surgeon

Philip Smart is a Specialist Colorectal surgeon. He studied Medicine at the University of Melbourne and Royal Melbourne Hospital Clinical School, graduating in 1999. He completed surgical training at Royal Melbourne Hospital, obtaining a Fellowship in General Surgery in 2009. He was appointed as a Visiting Medical Officer at Royal Melbourne, Royal Women's and Austin Health in General Surgery. He then completed 3 years of subspecialist training in Colon and Rectal surgery, including a Clinical Fellowship in 2013 at the Cleveland Clinic, Ohio USA, one of the leading colorectal surgery units in the world.

He completed a Doctor of Medical Science degree (D.Med.Sci) at the University of Melbourne under the supervision of Professor A.Heriot and A/Prof J.Mackay. In addition, he holds a degree in Clinical Research Methods through Monash University.

He completed Robotic Surgery Training at the Cleveland Clinic, Ohio, and Methodist Hospital, Texas.

He is currently the Deputy Director in the Department of Surgery, Anaesthesia and Procedural Medicine at Austin Health, Head of Surgery at The Surgery Centre, Austin Health, Deputy Director of the Gastrointestinal Clinical Institute at Epworth HealthCare and Chair of the Operations Committee for the Binational Colorectal Cancer Audit (BCCA). He holds public hospital appointments at both Austin and Eastern Health and is a Senior Lecturer in the Surgery at the University of Melbourne.
